Hot Topics & Areas of Concern: Summer 2008 The 100th Anniversary of the Quetico Superior Region Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the initial formation of what was to become Quetico Provincial Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. In 1909, a jagged process of preservation and restoration began that resulted in a huge, roadless and protected forest in the middle of the North American continent. It has become a treasured spot chosen annually by hundreds of thousands of canoeists, fishermen, skiers, hikers and campers as a site to explore, relax and find adventure. READ MORE > Spring 2008 Namakan Dam Update As environmental assessment continues on two dams proposed for the Namakan River west of Quetico Provincial Park, an area conservation group is now publicly opposing the project. The Rainy Lake Conservancy, which had previously taken a neutral position regarding Ojibway Power and Energy Group’s plans to build dams at Hay Rapids and High Falls, is now against construction. READ MORE > Summer 2007 Bringing Back the White Pine The White Pine Initiative to restore the white pine tree to healthy and sustainable populations in the Quetico Superior region got off to a fast start in May. Before the ground had cooled from the Ham Lake fire, the Foundation had purchased 6,000 seedling trees and donated them to the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway Committee for planting by volunteers over the Memorial Day weekend. Those dividing “B” words have long been embedded in the names used to describe the Quetico-Superior region. The notion, however, that a modern-day international divide cuts through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park usually fades into the remoteness of the place.
