Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Landwehr recently explained some of the rationale behind Minnesota’s first regulated wolf hunt.

The commissioner’s comments came in THIS interview with the Duluth News Tribune’s Sam Cook.

The state’s first regulated wolf hunt will begin Saturday, November 3. The early wolf season will last up to nine days in northeastern Minnesota and up to 16 days in northwestern and east-central Minnesota. The late season, which also allows trapping for those with a wolf trapping license, will begin November 24 statewide.

In the interview, Landwehr addressed concerns about Minnesota wolves losing their fear of humans, the need to make sure Minnesota wolf regulations abide by treaty agreements with the Chippewa bands, and the status of the Animal Damage Control program.

Landwehr said the DNR hopes hunters will take 400 wolves during the season.
