The early-spring of 2010 was the warmest on record in the Quetico-Superior region according to data from the International Falls weather station, which has observed conditions longer than any other station in the area.

The average temperature in International Falls during March and April was 40.0 degrees, which topped the previous high of 38.9 degrees set in 1987. March 2010 was the warmest March on record, and while this April wasn’t a record-breaker itself, it was warm enough to make the two-month stretch historic.

The lack of snow-cover was instrumental to the warm temperatures. It was an exceptional spring across Minnesota for precipitation as well — only Duluth recorded any snowfall in April, and that was just a trace amount.

The month of May, however, has begun with below average temperatures in the Quetico-Superior region.
