It has been 100 years since President Theodore Roosevelt designated northeastern Minnesota as Superior National Forest. Encompassing what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, it was one of the first steps toward protecting and managing the health of what is known today as Canoe Country.

Superior National Forest staff and friends will gather at the Wellstone Community Center this Thursday, September 24 for an open house celebrating the Forest’s Centennial. Forest Supervisor Jim Sanders, Deputy Forest Supervisor Mark Hummel, and Public Service Team Leader Sandy Skrien will be on hand to give hourly presentations on the history of the Forest.

This free event is family friendly, running from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be special activities for the kids, door prizes and free parking. For more information, call 218-626-4300 or view the invitation.
